What have Pre School been exploring this half term?

What a wonderful first half term we have had! We are so proud of how well all of the children have settled into their new room. They have come in each day with big smiles and have quickly grown in confidence, becoming familiar with their new routines and surroundings. The children have been so focused and full of fun, conversation and some fantastic ideas. Group times are full of focus and attention and tailored to individual strengths and needs and they are already picking up a range of new skills. Letters and sounds activities are really supporting the children’s listening, attention and language skills. We’re very impressed!

Our Book of the Term; Room on the Broom, has been a huge hit! The children love listening to the story throughout the day and have enjoyed becoming familiar with the characters, events and repeated phrases. It has supported lots of lovely opportunities for talking, listening and joining in together, they are even independently acting out parts in the duck garden. This is adding a real focus to the children’s play. The wand making was great as a finger gym activity and some children have even learnt how to tie a knot!  One of our favourite experiences this term has been exploring colour mixing and potion making. The children have loved experimenting with different colours and adding natural materials they have collected from outside to create their own magical potions.

The children have also thoroughly enjoyed exploring our craft station. They have been experimenting with lots of different colours and materials while developing their creative ideas. It has been fantastic to see them becoming more confident with using scissors safely and using glue independently. Painting with nature allowed them to ask lots of questions, explore pattern and texture and at times get very messy.

The children are really keen on role play, construction and mark making. Some children are already writing parts of their name or all of it, and some of the drawings on our gallery wall are absolutely fantastic.
Outside we have been making camp fires, flying on broomsticks, out exploring Penzance such as the park by the leisure centre and Penlee park. The children have been so well behaved when we have been out and about and people have praised them within the community. The children are fascinated with autumn, nature and our local environment, we have been learning about trees, and seeds, exploring autumns gifts in a sensory basket and they are really intrigued by the life cycle of a ladybird.

Our trips to the local parks have given us lots of opportunities to explore the outdoors, and the children have particularly enjoyed collecting natural treasures such as conkers, leaves and other materials to bring back and use in their play. The children have been great with the care home visits, and it’s been lovely to see the interactions between the different generations and the fun and laughter is really warming and lovely to witness.

Our new library has also been a special addition to the nursery. The children understand that the library is a calm and quiet space where we can enjoy books together, and they have really enjoyed spending time there. We have ur Lending Library set up for children to choose a book with their parents and take home to share together.

We have seen a big increase in the children’s independence. They are becoming much more confident in managing their own belongings, packing their bags and getting themselves dressed. It has been wonderful to see how proud they are of what they can do for themselves. The children have also enjoyed all of the mathematical games and activities available in the room. Through play, they have been developing their understanding of numbers, counting, matching and problem-solving.

Our group times have been another area where the children have made fantastic progress. They have become much more confident at listening to others, joining in with discussions and waiting patiently for their turn to talk. We have been exploring rhyming words, counting syllables and they have even collaborated as a team to write their own poem all about autumn.

It has been a joy to watch the children grow in confidence, independence and curiosity during their first term. They have embraced new experiences, enjoyed learning through play and built lovely relationships with their friends and adults. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved so far and can’t wait to see what the next term brings

Whats Next? Yes there’s more!

With two weeks remaining we still have lots to do, exploring gravity, volume and speed whilst playing with water, guttering and apples and Conkers. We are going to be exploring pumpkins, allowing us to practice cutting and peeling skills, exploring texture and touch, and exploring life cycles of vegetables. We are going to be cooking pumpkin soup and hopefully we can get out to our local fruit and veg shop so the children can buy what we need.

We will be focusing on weather and different environments during group time, we are going to be making dens for dragons, so they can work together and use their great problem solving skills. We will be using play dough to help with number recognition, and using wax crayons and watercolours to continue to extend their drawing and mark making.

Their have been many individual achievements already that have been shared during their individual observations.
Having our own room, solely for pre school has been a real positive for the children and how we can follow their interests. We have spent so much time outside enjoying the beautiful autumn we have had, and the children are definitely all looking forward to celebrating Halloween this year after our focus book Room on the Broom!
