Welcome to the Museum Workshop 2

On Wednesday 18th March we were invited to Penlee House Gallery and Museum for our second Welcome to the Museum workshop with Katie and Jo!

On the way to the museum we stopped to enjoy our snack in the sunshine in Penlee Park and had time for half an hour in Penlee Playpark before going in to the museum.

Katie and Jo welcomed us to the museum where we hung up our coats and climbed the spiral staircase to the museum rooms upstairs. We sat as a group on the shape mat and Katie and Jo asked the children what they could remember from our workshop last week. We were very impressed with the children’s memory, they remembered all about the hot water bottle to warm a bed, and the glass fizzy pop bottle too. They also remembered about the two paintings that we’d looked at and talked about. We then handled some new artefacts such as a precious porcelain cup and saucer and a copper bowl and talked about what they were made from and how delicate the porcelain was.

Next we went on a treasure hunt around the museum looking for photos on the treasure map. The photos were copper items that the children needed to find. They listened carefully to the rules in the museum to keep all the precious items safe such as using our ‘looking eyes’ and not our hands to explore, staying behind the ropes and not touching the glass. Also to use our walking feet. Everyone did ever so well. The children found the copper items and went on to find the next items which had clues such as ‘find something with wheels’ ‘find something you would wear’ etc.

Our next part of the trip was to explore the gallery rooms downstairs and see what we could spot within the paintings. The children showed off their super listening and observation skills, quickly spotting the objects. They also did some very good fast excited walking rather than running to find the next items! They looked for things such as ‘a dog’ ‘hats’ ‘a horse’ ‘the sea’ ‘rocks’. All of these clues really encouraged them to look closely at the paintings and spot lots of details.

Our last activity was to create our own mini museum! The children loved this activity. Katie and Jo had prepared the activity so that the children each had their own named museum and a selection of decorations to create a mosaic pattern on the outside of their mini building. They were then able to choose two paintings to ‘hang’ inside their museum and they chose their favourite paintings from the museum. Everyone got stuck in with their crafting and looked ever so proud of their creations!

THANK YOU to Katie and Jo for another wonderful workshop for our children. They are incredibly lucky to have these memorable experiences!
