Visiting St Michael’s Mount

We love visiting St Michael’s Mount and feel incredibly lucky that we are able to! We’ve taken children on numerous occasions now and every trip shows us something new and exciting.

We started our adventure today with a walk from the nursery to Penzance bus station where we catch the number 2 bus to Marazion! The children were excited to spot the sights on the way from looking out the bus window. They loved pressing the button to request the bus stopped at our stop. They were very polite saying thank you to the bus driver as we got off the bus. We then spotted the mount as we walked towards the causeway!

When we arrived in Marazion the causeway was slightly later opening than anticipated, due to the waves. We decided to have our snack and play some games on the beach! We were also very lucky to be able to watch the amphibious vehicles, the St Michael, take passengers from the beach to the island. The children watched in awe as the boat drove across the sand and then floated across the sea to the island.

Once the waves had cleared, we were able to start our walk to the island across the causeway where Kerry was eagerly waiting for us to arrive. We had lots of conversation about the tide and how it makes the sea move, the sand uncover and the causeway too.

Kerry took us through the private entrance (as we were VIP Very Important People visiting!) where we could watch the team of gardeners who were hard at work clearing the storm damage. They were cutting some of the larger trees into large wood rounds and moving them with a small tractor, and they were using a chipper to chip some of the smaller branches.

Next we went to the learning hub where we were treated to an oat milk hot chocolate which was delicious! After this Kerry told us the story of Cormoran the giant and the children joined in with actions (including making bunny ears that showed numbers!) and we even acted out the story when Kerry told it to us for a second time! They were fantastic actors and actresses! Kerry handed around Jack’s horn to show the children and they handled it very carefully and she blew it gently and the sound mesmerised the children.

Whilst we were completing a loo run before heading back, the children explored Kerry’s beach treasures tray and asked fantastic questions! ‘Where did you find them?’ ‘What are these called?’

We then walked back across the causeway to the mainland. We waited for the number 4 bus to take us back to Penzance. At Penzance bus station we then caught our last bus, the number 17, which took us closer to the nursery for our final walk back.

The children were absolutely FANTASTIC throughout the whole adventure. We were also treated to a beautiful rainbow on the island! As always – we’d like to say an enormous thank you to Kerry, the Island Education Officer, for giving us such an enthusiastic and warm welcome to the island, for sharing her knowledge and stories and introducing us to the families who live and work on the island. THANK YOU!
