Visiting Gardener’s House July 2026!

When we visited Daisy at the Gardener’s House we created our own art work inspired by the tree stumps. We explored different media to create prints from the texture of the stumps. First we used chalk on paper to rub against the tree stump. Then we used a candle to rub the wax on to the paper creating markings from the texture of the wood, we then painted over it with coffee and water, this showed the grain and markings of the wood.
We learnt that rubbing a candle on paper and then painting over it with coffee and water creates a wax resist effect. The wax from the candle repels the water-based coffee paint. When the coffee dries, the areas with wax remain bare, making the hidden drawing pop through the brown coffee wash which we all found very interesting!!

The children explored the different plants/flowers and appeared to enjoy feeling the texture and smelling them and used great descriptive words. We then went inside to see the pictures of the art work of tree stumps that fell over in the storm in January, the children happily spoke about their experiences of the storm and remembered key events that happened, we then went around the art exhibition and looked for the smallest and largest tree stump picture.

We put our artwork of the tree stump up in the art exhibition, to showcase how fantastic the children’s art work is! We took it down to bring back to display at nursery!
