We offer quality learning experiences for children.
Today we welcomed Jo and Katie to the nursery this morning for the first of 3 ‘Welcome to the Museum’ workshops! This is the third year that we have run these workshops for our Pre School Leavers and we’d like to thank Penlee House Gallery and Museum for running the sessions with us.
To start today’s workshop, Katie and Jo talked about what a museum is and the children shared their experiences of going to a museum, inclduing exciting tales of seeing dinosaur skeletons in the big museums in London. (We love the Natural Hisory Museum too!)
Katie and Jo then showed them a mixture of ‘old and new’ items such as comparing an old ceramic hot water bottle to a new rubber hot water bottle, an old glass bottle to a new plastic bottle, a candle lamp compared to our electric lights.
The children took it in turns to handle each item carefully, being sure not to drop them as they may break. The all pretended to blow out the candle and also pretended to drink from the glass bottle.
We then looked at an old wooden toy and made our own paper version. The children decorated the paper with patterns and then rolled them up in to cones, scrunched paper in to a ball and attached it with a string. There were some very creative designs and lots of giggles as they tried to catch the ball in the cone!
We then looked at some posters showing paintings the children will see when they visit the museum, the children spotten local areas in the pictures. Katie and Jo then finished their workshop with a story about visiting the museum. The children showed lots of interest in the workshop and we’re all very excited to go and visit the museum next Wednesday!
