We offer quality learning experiences for children.
Today was the first of 3 workshops with Penlee House Gallery and Museum specifically run for our Pre School children. Last year we trialled this group of workshops with Penlee and it was a huge success so we are repeating it this year.
Workshop 1: Penlee Gallery and Museum visit us here at the nursery to introduce the topic.
Workshop 2: We take the children to visit the Museum and explore.
Workshop 3: Penlee Gallery and Museum visit us here at the nursery for a final workshop.
Here’s what we explored today! Written by Rachel ๐
Today our Pre school children had a very special visit, from some of the ladies that work at Penlee House Museum and Art Gallery, their names are Jo, Katie and Helen. They brought a box of objects and a folder full of pictures. The children were very lucky to explore some very old artefacts, there was an old water bottle, a candle stick holder, an old glass bottle containing a marble, an old wooden rocking horse toy and an old game.
The children did some great problem solving and listened to clues to help them identify what the objects used to be used for. This involved the children learning lots of new vocabulary, considering what life was like for people a long time ago go, such as with no electricity, how things were made out of glass, wood and clay.
We talked about how objects are fragile and how we must handle them using two hands and be very careful when passing them around. The children were stars.
We then made a toy like one of the old objects that we explore, the children explored pattern, shape and space, this links in well to our room intentions this term, exploring maths in the everyday. The children decorated some card and then they were helped to roll their paper into a cone shape, they chose what coloured wool to use and then screwed up a piece of coloured paper to create a ball, the ladies helped attach the string to the cone and the ball to the string. They have had great fun playing with their games, some of the children displayed their amazing hand eye coordination, and mastered the correct action very quickly.
We then came together on the carpet and Jo very nicely shared some books about museums and old treasures. The children met Penny, the little cat that protects Penlee Museum in the nights when no one is there. The children very quickly noticed that Penlee and penny rhymed!
They were then shown some of the amazing old paintings, some were very local and of places around Penzance that they would have seen, such as the Prom and Abby slip and inner harbour. They also saw some of the old objects such as a beautiful copper vase and a very very old tea set made of metal, that had a Heron on it.
We are so excited to go and visit Penlee House Museum and Gallery in the next couple of weeks so go an explore and get involved in lots of challenges, investigations and more crafting.
The ladies all commented on how wonderful the children’s engagement was and how fantastic their behaviour was. Well done everyone!
